It's April 15-- Tax Day. Hopefully you're not in a last minute scramble, but if you are and your only option is to pay your tax bill with a credit card, here's what you can expect. According to the IRS, paying with a credit or debit card is convenient, safe and secure. You can make a payment by phone, Internet or when e-filing your tax returns. For added safety, the IRS does not receive or store credit card numbers. When you make a tax payment with your debit or credit card you will see "United States Treasury Tax Payment" on your card billing statement so you have added proof of your payment.
You can make a tax payment by credit card using an American Express® Card, Discover® Card, MasterCard® or Visa® card. You should check with your credit card company because you may be charged a convenience fee. Making a payment with a credit card can typically be done through the tax preparation software that you use or the tax preparer that's assisting you. Here is the information you may need to provide when making a tax payment with a credit card:
- Primary Social Security Number
- Secondary Social Security Number
- The Employer Identification Number for business payments
- Your credit card account number
- The expiration date of your card
- Your home address
- The amount of payment you wish to make
- A daytime telephone number in case there is a problem
